Consol Softball Team Earns Playoff Berth

BRENHAM — Taylor Oberg and Kayla Bowman each had two hits, including triples, and Sarah Cathey pitched a five-hitter to lead the A&M Consolidated Lady Tigers to a 6-4 victory over The Woodlands College Park Lady Cavaliers in a District 14-5A softball tiebreaker game Saturday.

Consol (12-16-1, 6-7) advances into the playoffs as the league’s No. 4 seed to face 13-5A champion Kingwood (25-3), which went 15-1 in league play.

Against the Lady Cavs, Oberg and Bowman helped the Lady Tigers to a 5-0 lead after three innings, and Cathey did the rest. She struck out five and walked one, allowing only two earned runs. It was the second time this month that Cathey beat the Lady Cavs in a must-win game. Consol posted a 9-7 victory on April 9 at home.

Oberg singled to start the game. Paige Kopetsky reached on an error. Beth Ashley singled to score Oberg. Briana Holtkamp was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Kyndall Foust singled home Kopetsky to make it 2-0.

College Park recovered to retire the next three batters, but the Lady Tigers added three runs in the second. Bowman and Oberg hit back-to-back triples. Kopetsky then singled home Oberg. College Park retired the next two batters, but Foust singled home Kopetsky, who had stolen third.

Consol’s final run came in the seventh. Cathey and Ashley Esparza drew walks around a single by Bowman. Oberg then walked to force in the final run.

Nikki Giles had three of College Park’s hits and figured in both innings the Lady Cavs (11-14-1, 5-8) scored. In the fifth, Kayla Shows walked and Rebecca Romero singled. Giles tripled with two outs to cut Consol’s lead to 5-2.

In the seventh, Giles hit a two-out double to drive in Paige Thompson, who had reached on an error. Giles scored when Julie French reached on an error, but Cathey recovered to get the final out.
