Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial Dedicates War of 1812 Statue This Friday

The fifth of seven statues at Veterans Park in College Station recognizing the history of Texas and the United States will be dedicated Friday morning.

The Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial (BVVM) Board of Directors is hosting the program at 10:00 a.m., dedicating the War of 1812 statue.

The keynote speaker for the dedication is Lt. Cmdr. Jonathon Chavane, USN (ret.).

Fain McDougal, Vice President of the BVVM Board of Directors, says the dedication is timed with the bicentennial of the war message given to Congress on June 1, 1812.

The life size bronze statue, created by J. Payne Lara of Navasota, is entitled, “Don’t give up the ship!”

This joins five other statues along the half-mile history trail. Statues commemorating the American Revolution, the War for Texas Independence, Korean War and World War II have been dedicated over the last two years.

The BVVM will be launching a capital campaign for the Vietnam Memorial this summer. Donations are currently being accepted for all the memorials. Inquires can be e-mailed to info@bvvm.org or call 979-450-3296.
