Two Synthetic Turf Fields Proposed For Veterans Park

The College Station City Council at Thursday’s meeting considers the first step towards adding two artificial turf fields at Veterans Park.

Deputy City Manager Frank Simpson says the $3.7 million dollar improvement would be paid by hotel occupancy tax (HOT) money.

Simpson says state law allows HOT funds to improve existing property to generate more lodging. Simpson says the Convention and Visitors Bureau can document 5,500 room nights from those participating in soccer, over 6,000 nights for softball, and 2,000 in 7-on-7 football.

Parks and Recreation Director David Schmitz says they’re turning away requests due to lack of space from College Station as well as out of town.

Schmitz says the lighted fields can be used for soccer, rugby, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, flag football, and the goal of keeping 7-on-7 football which is moving off the A&M campus.

Thursday night, the council will consider a contract to design four fields and build two of them next winter on the University Drive side of Veterans Park. Staff recommends hiring the firm that added fields at A&M’s Penberthy complex.
