Ex-Cop’s Attorneys Want Houston Chief Charged with Contempt

HOUSTON (AP) _ Defense attorneys for an ex-officer accused of taking part in the videotaped beating of a 15-year-old burglary suspect are asking a judge to hold Houston’s police chief in contempt of court for speaking to the media after he testified in the fired officer’s trial.

Attorneys for Andrew Blomberg made the request during the fired Houston police officer’s trial on Wednesday. A judge was not expected to make a decision until Friday.

Blomberg is charged with misdemeanor official oppression in the beating and faces up to a year in jail if convicted. He was one of four officers fired and indicted after the incident.

After testifying Tuesday, Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland Jr. told the Houston Chronicle the indicted officers should have been charged with felonies instead of misdemeanors.
