The College Station City Council has approved ordinance changes in the Northgate district that allows among other things the return of outdoor consumption of alcohol.
The unaminous vote allows businesses serving food and/or alcohol bordering University, College Main, and the Promenade to block off outdoor areas in front of those buildings.
Northgate executive director Chris Scotti says the outdoor business areas will be created once sidewalk expansion is completed along University and College Main becomes closed to vehicular traffic from University to Patricia. That’s supposed to happen before the first A&M home football game on September 8th.
Chris Scotti visits with WTAW’s Bill Oliver.
The amount of outdoor space depends on location. According to the ordinance, an establishment adjacent to College Main can extend 26 feet, a business on the Promenade can extend 13 feet, and on University the distance is 10 feet.
During peak hours (along College Main between 9:00 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. daily and all day during A&M home football games, parents weekend, graduation, and city sponsored events), businesses also have to have a physical barrier separating their area from sidewalks.
During non-business hours outdoor furniture must be indoors.
