Bryan Council Returning BTU Personnel Decisions to City Manager

It will be the Bryan City Manager who will make all future personnel decisions at the city’s electric company.

A unaminous city council Tuesday night supported Mike Southerland’s motion transferring authority held the last 11 years by the BTU management.

Mike Southerland reads his motion.

Southerland says it’s about simplifying and unifying all city employees and not about the BTU board.

The motion emphasized the BTU General Manager would report to the City Manager.

The motion also transfers control of deciding future land acquisitions through eminent domain to the governing body, limiting BTU to acquiring easements.

The motion also gives the council the final say in the city’s relationship with the Texas Municipal Power Association, specifically contracts between the city and TMPA and Bryan’s representatives on the TMPA board.

Mike Southerland explains his reasons for making the changes.
