Former Census Leader on Texas Preschoolers

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A former head of the U.S. Census Bureau says Texas must do more to prepare preschool-age children before they enter kindergarten so they won’t drop out later.

Former state demographer Steve Murdock also says Texas needs to boost its grant program for college students.

The San Antonio Express-News reported Monday that Murdock, now a sociology professor at Rice University, says current trends could lead to three of every 10 workers not having a high school education by 2040.

Murdock led the U.S. Census Bureau during the administration of George W. Bush.
