Well-Known South Texas Sheriff Found Dead

JOHNSON CITY, Texas (AP) _ Longtime Blanco County Sheriff Bill Elsbury has died at the age of 60.

A Blanco County Sheriff’s Office statement says Elsbury died Monday at his Johnson City home. Chief Deputy Robert Morgan, who will serve as acting sheriff, said Elsbury died suddenly of natural causes.

No cause of death had been determined, but Morgan said Elsbury was stricken shortly after working in a field.

Elsbury was first elected sheriff of the rural Hill Country county in 1996 after running as an independent after retiring from the Houston Police Department. He was running for re-election as a Republican when he was stricken.

His wife, Debby Elsbury, is the county’s district clerk.
