Signing Day – Aggies swipe DE Ray from Missouri and Johnson from Texas

Today is signing day for football and other Fall Sports as letters of enrollment  started rolling off the faxes at football offices around the country at  7 am this morning.

The Aggies pulled two surprises this morning when Missouri pledge Edmund Ray of St. Louis changed his mind and signed with A&M. He’s a 6-5, 290 pound defensive end, regarded as the top recruit in Missouri. Also, Texas pledge Thomas Johnson switched from the Longhorns to the Aggies. He was the No. 3 ranked wide receiver in the country by ESPNU, out of Dallas Skyline.

ESPNU has ranked A&M the 4th best recruiting class in the SEC and 12th best in the nation.

Before signing Ray A&M   may have lost its chance for a top 10 status as in the last two days, reports are that they have lost three previous oral pledges, those from DB Darion Thomas, who says he’s signing with Tulane; DB Corey Thompson, who has switched to LSU and WR Bralon Addison, who is expected to switch to Oregon.

Rivals.com still lists A&M as the No. 10 recruiting class but that was still with Addison as the Aggies No. 2 catch.

Rivals lists A&M’s new SEC Rival Alabama as the having the top class, followed by Texas. From the SEC, LSU is ranked 12th, South Carolina 15th, Tennessee 18th, Georgia 19th and Auburn 20th.

Ofcourse these ranking are based on pledges, which are non-binding; they can and will change as athletes  change their minds today.

You can keep up with A&M signings at aggieathletic.com, on the TexAgs Radio show from 9-11 on 1150AM, on the Belluci Hour from Noon to 1 from the TAP on 1150 AM and at 4 pm today when Coach Kevin Sumlin speaks about the class. Chip Howard will carry that live to start his sportstalk show on 1150 AM.
