Pancake the Shih Tzu will be allowed to deliver her litter.

The family adopting what turned out to be a pregnant dog from the Bryan Animal Center faced terminating the pregnancy and putting Pancake in a life-threatening situation.

Deputy City Manager Hugh Walker says a resolution was reached Monday. That follows a Friday afternoon call by a center employee to Pancake’s forever family ordering sterilization or facing criminal penalties.

Comments from Hugh Walker.

Walker says Pancake’s procedure will be done when the time is appropriate.

Pancake’s owner, Melissa Floyd, says some the pups have already been spoken for.

Floyd says she hopes in the future the city shelter will sterilize dogs and cats before they’re adopted.

Walker says they’ll look into adding pregnancy tests for animals at the center and review notification procedures to give families more time to respond.
