AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A State Board of Education committee has recommended indefinite postponement of new science book orders for Texas classrooms.
They’re preparing for an anticipated state budget crunch projected to be as much as $18 billion.
However, the board has adopted new science curriculum standards that aren’t all reflected in the current textbooks, so they agreed to ask publishers to make bids on “supplemental materials” that will include the new standards.
New books for the state’s 4.8 million students were projected to cost almost $350 million. Cost estimates on the supplemental materials had not yet been determined.
The board is set to take a final vote on the recommendation Friday.
