With Memorial Day approaching, for those of you visiting cemeteries in College Station, it may be your last opportunity to place an unlimited number of items on grave markers.
For the last two months, the College Station City Council and Cemetery Advisory Committee have exchanged ideas to improve the appearance and reduce maintenance. The council was scheduled at its last meeting to adopt a two item limit that could be placed at a gravesite.
The council and advisory committee were also ready to stop considering variances on the size of headstones. The commitee told the council allowing exceptions to the monument size restrictions goes against the look and intent first established by the city in 1948.
But action was postponed to allow the council and cemetery committee to hold a joint meeting. The date and location have not been set.
The proposed changes would apply to College Station’s new Memorial Cemetery and Aggie Field of Honor as well as the city cemetery that dates back to the mid-1800’s.
