LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) _ Texas officials say the driver in a bus crash that killed one Abilene Christian University student last week was not speeding at the time the vehicle left a roadway south of Abilene.
Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Sparky Dean said in an email statement Tuesday that 34-year-old Michael Adam Nicodemus actually was going 5 mph below the posted 70-mph limit.
Twelve of the 16 occupants of the bus were ejected. Nineteen-year-old Anabel Reid of Petersburg was pronounced dead at the scene Friday. Several were critically injured.
The driver was the only person wearing a seat belt. All the seats were equipped with belts but state law does not require passengers in this type of bus to wear them.
The investigation into the wreck continues.
