Nursing Home Resident Dies of Fume Inhalation

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) _ A woman is dead and six other people were sickened by what investigators suspect was carbon monoxide poisoning at a Midland assisted living center.

The incident happened early Wednesday at the Rock House assisted living center for developmentally disabled people, near Hogan Park on Midland’s north side. Midland fire-rescue officials received their first report at 12:17 a.m. Wednesday after an employee reported for work and found the attending staff member sick in the living room.

Assistant Fire Marshal David Hickman says a search of the center found 53-year-old Betty Contreras had stopped breathing while asleep in her room. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was sent to Fort Worth for an autopsy. Hickman says the six other residents were treated at Midland Memorial Hospital and discharged.
