Houston Surgeon Drops Engagement Ring Lawsuit

HOUSTON (AP) _ A Houston surgeon has dropped a lawsuit demanding that his ex-fiance return a $73,000 engagement ring.

Instead, Craig Fischer will pay the woman $100,000 to cover her legal fees.

The Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/pyJWq4) reported Monday that Fischer apologized for the lawsuit, calling it a “big mistake,” in a signed statement. The statement was provided to the newspaper by the woman’s attorney.

Fischer is the chief of digestive surgical oncology and an associate professor of surgery at Houston’s Methodist Hospital.

He filed the lawsuit last month after the woman, an account executive for a financial services company, broke off the engagement. He also wanted the woman to pay back $75,000 from a shared bank account described as a gift “in contemplation of the parties’ marriage.”
