HOUSTON (AP) _ The future of a law used to convict former Enron Corp. CEO Jeff Skilling could be in doubt as attorneys for the former head of the fallen energy giant get ready to challenge it in the U.S. Supreme Court.
The high court was set to hear oral arguments on Monday in Skilling’s appeal of his 2006 convictions for his role in the downfall of the once-mighty Houston-based energy giant.
Skilling’s attorneys say the law, a 28-word addendum to the federal mail and wire fraud statute, is unconstitutionally vague. But federal prosecutors argue the law was appropriate for Skilling’s crimes.
Legal experts are unsure whether a successful challenge would overturn some of Skilling’s convictions or all of them, possibly resulting in a new trial.
