HOUSTON (AP) _ Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison called herself the reformer. Activist Debra Medina said she’s David to her opponents’ Goliaths. Gov. Rick Perry touted himself as the protector from Washington’s evils and incompetence.
In a rare joint appearance, the three Republican candidates for Texas governor made individual pitches Wednesday night in Houston. They made their appeals to more than 500 GOP supporters at a sold-out Lincoln-Reagan Day dinner, an annual Harris County Republican Party event.
The Republican primary is Tuesday.
The candidates broke little new ground Wednesday night.
Hutchison warned of tough economic times looming and renewed calls for term limits for governor and improved ethical standards in government.
Medina pitched her theme of eliminating property taxes and tried to separate herself from two big-government incumbents.
Perry blamed Washington for the nation’s ills and hailed Texas as the best economy in the nation.
