Two Grass Fires in Brazos County

All fire departments in Brazos County fought two two grass fires Monday afternoon.

Michele Meade at the Emergency Management office says one fire was off Sandy Point Road from Lake Bryan to Rye School Road.  The other was along Steep Hollow Road near Elmo Weedon Road.

Brazos County Precinct 4 Volunteer Fire Department was the lead agency at the Sandy Point Road fire. Chief Joe Ondrasek says a squirrel got into an electric transformer, and sparks from arcing electric lines started the fire. Between 40 and 45 acres were burned and two structures were threatened, a home and a barn, but neither were damaged. Ondrasek says no one was at the home but he credited the property owners for keeping the grass cut in preventing further problems. No firefighters were injured.

Ondrasek says the Brazos County Wildfire Task Force, involving all fire departments in the county, responded to both wildfires.  The new network was formed over the summer and started the mutual aid response in August. The lead department in the Steep Hollow Road grass fire was Brazos County Precinct 3 VFD.
