Hutchison Invokes Football Comeback

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ Republican gubernatorial hopeful Kay Bailey Hutchison jokingly referred to a Hail Mary during a campaign stop on the eve of early voting.

The U.S. senator campaigned in Fort Worth on Monday with Dallas Cowboys great Roger Staubach. She said he’s known for coming from behind and inventing the Hail Mary pass, which she says is “looking better all the time.”

Hutchison trails Gov. Rick Perry in a new poll conducted for five Texas newspapers, but the two could head into a runoff.

During several appearances Monday, Hutchison unveiled her “Declare Your Independence” tour — a two-week finishing kick to her primary campaign. It refers to Texas Independence Day on March 2, which also is primary election day.

Hutchison contends Perry has trampled on Texans’ rights to benefit his political allies.
