Texans to Don: “Bring it On!”

McALLEN, Texas (AP) _ Tropical Storm Don is headed for the Gulf Coast, and Texans are saying bring it on! Please!

The Gulf Coast usually doesn’t welcome severe weather, but more than 90 percent of Texas is experiencing a serious drought.

The couple of inches of rain Don is expected to bring won’t be enough to turn things around, but emergency managers are hoping it’s just the beginning.

Danielle Hale, emergency management coordinator for Nueces County says, “We’re looking forward to the rain.”

Don is expected to make landfall early Saturday as a tropical storm with sustained winds of 55 to 60 mph. The county sits squarely in the storm’s path, but Hale says there are no plans to order evacuations along coastal areas.

County beaches also will remain open, but Padre Island National Seashore, south of Corpus Christi, is closed.

The park’s recorded weather report Thursday closed with: “at least we’re going to get some rain. Hey, wonderful!”
