Jailer Convicted for Smuggling Saw Tacos

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Jurors have begun deliberating punishment for a former South Texas jailer convicted of bribery.

The Bexar County jury returned the guilty verdict against Alfred Casas after he stuffed hacksaw blades into tacos smuggled to a murder suspect awaiting trial.

Casas was convicted Tuesday of two counts of accepting bribes and one of providing an implement for escape in the failed December 2009 plot. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Casas, who has back trouble, received prescription drugs in return for smuggling the blades to Jacob Keller. The blades were found during a random search of cells.

Keller in January pleaded guilty to an April 2009 double slaying and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

The San Antonio Express-News reports jurors deliberated 31/2 hours Wednesday.
