Local Elections May Move from May to November

City and school board elections in Brazos County may be moving to November starting next year.

That follows presentations by City Secretaries in College Station and Bryan to their respective city councils on Tuesday.

Both councils plan on considering final recommendations later this year.

The changes were caused by new state laws that will tie up county-owned equipment on federal primaries and runoffs.

Bryan City Secretary Mary Lynne Stratta says one option is moving the city-school elections to November.

Stratta says there were two ways to continue May elections. One involved going to odd numbered years and changing term lengths.

Another option quickly dismissed by a majority on the Bryan council, was spending $480,000 dollars on election equipment, plus $50,000 annually in maintenance and an unknown amount in storage. The equipment cost in College Station was estimated at $425,000.
