NORMAN – The Texas A&M women’s basketball team had a second-half surge come up short in Sunday’s 77-62 loss to the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners inside the Lloyd Noble Center.
Aicha Coulibaly led the Aggies with 16 points to go with six rebounds, one block and one steal. Sahara Jones added 11 points and eight rebounds. Lauren ware also had eight boards to go with eight points.
A bright spot for the Aggies was getting to the free throw line 29 times and converting on 79.3% (23-of-29). Texas A&M also owned a 17-10 edge in second chance points, but the Maroon & White were doomed by 3-of-19 (15.8%) from 3-point range.
Texas A&M (8-8, 1-3 SEC) was playing catchup early, falling behind 11-2 at the midway point of the first quarter and eventually 27-10 heading into the first intermission.
After Oklahoma (14-3, 2-2 SEC) scored the first five points of the second quarter, the Aggies went on 7-0 run to get back in the fray. Taliyah Parker’s 3-pointer at the 4:56 mark trimmed the deficit to 32-17. Oklahoma closed out the half on a 12-6 run, as Raegen Beers made 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, to take a 44-23 lead at halftime.
The Aggies got back in the fight in the third quarter, outscoring the Sooners 21-17, paced by Coulibaly’s seven points. Late in the quarter, Texas A&M went on a 6-0 run with Jones making 3-of-4 from the foul line and Amirah Abdur-Rahim sinking a 3-ppointer to cut the deficit to 59-44. Reyna Scott made two free throws in the waning seconds as Oklahoma took a 61-44 edge into the last intermission.
Texas A&M again outscored Oklahoma in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. The Aggies owned an 18-16 edge in the period but could only draw as close as 13 points when Sahara Jones made a free throw to cut the deficit to 75-62 with 1:11 remaining in the game.
The Maroon & White returns to the hardwood versus Georgia Thursday at 7 p.m. inside Reed Arena.
