Lednicky Cracks 1,000 Career Kills as Aggies Down Arkansas, 3-1

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M volleyball’s Logan Lednicky reached 1,000 career kills as the Aggies claimed their fourth conference win of the season after downing Arkansas Sunday afternoon in Reed arena, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-6, 25-16).

The Aggies (13-4, 4-3 SEC) secured their first win versus the Razorbacks (14-4, 4-2 SEC) since 2019, as Lednicky became the 20th member of Texas A&M’s 1,000 kill club with her 17th of the afternoon. The junior spearheaded the Maroon & White’s 59 total kills on the day, as she finished with 18, while Emily Hellmuth also reached double digits with 16.

Arkansas opened the match on the front foot, leading by four at the media timeout (15-11). The Aggies battled back to within two late (24-22), but the Razorbacks clinched the last point to take the opener, 25-22.

A&M responded in the second, winning the race to 10 as it led by four (10-6). The Maroon & White maintained their advantage behind an offensive onslaught, as 13 of their first 18 points came from kills (18-14). Arkansas fought all the way back to tie the match at 23, but heroics from Hellmuth in the form of a kill followed by an ace sealed the frame for the Aggies (25-23) and knotted the match, 1-1.

Carrying all the momentum into the third was A&M, as it raced out to an 8-1 advantage behind Maddie Waak at service line. The Aggies pushed on to lead by 11, forcing the Razorbacks to huddle up (15-4). Giving up no ground, the Maroon & White closed out the set with another staggering 10-2 streak to take the set by 19 points (25-6) and lead in the match, 2-1. The six points A&M allowed was the lowest total scored by an opponent in a single frame this season.

The teams traded blows in the fourth, as they were knotted at eight. The Aggies found some rhythm as they pulled away from Arkansas to hold a three-point gap at the media timeout, 15-12. Pushing on, the Maroon & White extended their lead to six on Lednicky’s 1,000th career kill (20-14). A&M ensured its fourth-conference win with a 5-2 run to close the set (25-16) and match, 3-1.

COACH’S QUOTES

Head coach Jamie Morrison on today’s match …

“It wasn’t the win that I was most proud of, it was the way we played and the way we battled. That’s what we talked about for the last three days since the loss to Florida. When I spoke to the team they laughed because they knew I was going to talk about response. That was what we are capable of playing like and it’s fun to watch. It’s a beautiful, fluid thing that happens out there. We’re capable of playing really good volleyball, and we’re going to push to do that the rest of the season.”

Morrison on Junior OPP Logan Lednicky’s 1,000th career kill …

“She’s grown up. Not from a kid to an adult but as a volleyball player and human being. I think if you went back and watched the match and had a video of me, there’s a lot of eyebrows raised on some swings that she wasn’t taking last year. She’s turning into what I think can be an elite international volleyball player. She came here to turn this program into what we all think it can be, and I think she’ll go down as one of the people that led it there and one of the greatest players to play here. Congratulations to her and I’m fired up for that accomplishment.”

PLAYER’S QUOTES

Junior OPP Logan Lednicky on reaching 1,000 career kills …

“It’s kind of surreal. I never thought I would be playing volleyball at Texas A&M. I owe all of my success to my teammates, coaches and support around me. This truly is a special place and I’m so happy to be here.”

Junior OH Emily Hellmuth on how the team responded to adversity …

“We talk a lot about how it’s more than just you. Looking at the teammate next to you, cheering on the teammate next to you, picking up the teammate next to you, that is what you do to get out of your own head. I know everyone is probably feeling a little shaky since we lost the last five sets in a row, but leaning on each other, looking each other in the eyes, and giving to teammates helped us get going.”
