Aggie Men’s Golfer Named Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M’s Wheaton Ennis earned SEC Men’s Golf Freshman of the Week the league announced Wednesday.

Ennis was honored for his effort in leading the Aggies at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational last weekend. After firing an opening round 72, he finished the tournament with two rounds of 68 at the famed golf course and helped A&M vault up five spots on the leaderboard.

The Eagle, Idaho, native finished 11th at a tournament that featured 11 teams which participated in last season’s NCAA Championships, including four of the eight teams that participated in the match play portion of the tournament. He ranked fifth in the field in scoring on par 4 holes with an average of 3.92 and he was one of just eight golfers in the field to shoot in the 60s in both of Saturday’s grueling rounds at par-70, 7,353-yard course

Ennis has participated in both Aggie events so far, posting a 71.67 scoring average with three rounds of par or batter.

Texas A&M returns to action Monday when they head to another famed course, Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, for the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational.
