The Bryan city council approves starting with eminent domain proceedings.

A unanimous vote with no public discussion at Tuesday’s (September 10) council meeting is associated with extending Groesbeck Street to the east past the railroad tracks to Texas.

City staff told the council the owner of about one-third of an acre of land at Texas and 32nd wants $500,000 dollars for the property. The city’s last offer was $350,000. An appraisal done by a contractor hired by the city set the value at $290,000. The council was also advised that a judge could set a higher price for the land.

The council agreed with the staff recommendation to offer $400,000 dollars and budget $50,000 in legal expenses.

Staff also told the council that the property has unpaid liens to the city totaling 130 thousand. The liens would be paid out of the landowner’s proceeds of the sale.
