Arctic Blast Causes Problems

Classes will resume Wednesday at Navarro Elementary School in Bryan.  That follows a power outage Tuesday morning.  Most students were picked up by 11 a.m. The remainder were taken to Bonham Elementary. BTU spokesman Bob Wheeler says the power loss at Navarro was due to two broken poles felled by giant trees uprooted during strong winds.

Wheeler says 850 BTU customers lost power when the storm came through about 4:30 a.m. Hardest hit was the city of Kurten. Wheeler says one customer reported a barn was picked up by the wind and carried across a field.  A second customer reported a roof was torn off.  Other BTU areas hit were around Millican and in Burleson County. Wheeler says most had power by 8:30 a.m.  As of Tuesday afternoon, Wheeler says about 50 residential customers were without power because lines were ripped from their meters, which requires homeowners to contact their electricians to make repairs.

College Station Utilities reported 287 customers were without power early Tuesday morning.  Spokeswoman Carol Baker Roach says there were pockets of minor outages but no feeder related issues.  At least three trees located outside cleared right of way fell into lines.

Due to the weather, the Bryan Aquatic Center will be closed through Wednesday, February 3rd.

Tuesday evening’s Bryan ISD’s American Sign Language Class at Henderson Elementary School is cancelled.
