Texas A&M Women’s Tennis in Singles Action at NCAA Tournament

STILLWATER – Texas A&M’s No. 1 Mary Stoiana and No. 45 Mia Kupres advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Tournament after a pair of victories in the opening round Monday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.

After winning the NCAA Team Championship versus Georgia Sunday night, Stoiana and Kupres returned to the court to face California’s No. 44 Hannah Viller Moeller and Grand Canyon University’s No. 106 Natasha Puehse, respectively.

Stoiana opened her match with a convincing 6-2 win in her first set and carried that momentum into the second, overwhelming Viller Moeller 6-0 to secure her 14th-straight singles victory and advance round two.

Matching Stoiana, Kupres started strong in her first set, winning 6-2 to grab an early lead. Puehse fought back in the second to tie things up, but Kupres responded with an emphatic 6-0 victory in the third to claim the first round.

Stoiana will take on Syracuse’s No. 53 Miyuka Kimoto with first serve set for 3 p.m., while Kupres squares off against Stanford’s No. 7 Connie Ma at 2 p.m. No. 7 Stoiana/Kupres will also pair in the doubles tournament and battle Syracuse’s No. 35 Miyuka Kimoto/Viktoriya Kanapatskaya at 7 p.m. in the opening round.
