Before flooding rains in May and April, the Bryan city council congratulated staff for receiving two of six awards from the Texas Floodplain Management Association.

City engineer Paul Kaspar said the city received the state association’s floodplain management excellence and community service awards.

Kaspar said a contributing factor was the city’s recent installation of flood warning flashers at 20 locations along streets that regularly flood.

In addition to the flashing light, is a warning sign saying “Turn Around Don’t Drown”.

And Kaspar said there is also equipment that alerts city officials when flooding starts, which allows employees to deploy barricades.
