Texas A&M Track & Fields Distin Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M track & field’s Lamara Distin was named SEC Outdoor Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Wednesday.

Distin continued her dominant 2024 campaign, as she was named SEC Outdoor Scholar-Athlete of the year which ensured her sweep of the honors in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

The Hanover, Jamaica, native has competed three times outdoors, claiming two wins, a second-place result and a national-leading mark. She opened her season at the 44 Farms Team Invitational where she cleared 1.96m/6-5 to win the event, the mark ranks her No. 1 in the country. Distin has also been a mainstay on The Bowerman Watch List, remaining on the list since the preseason release in January.

Her performance in the classroom separated her among the league’s best, sporting a 3.5 GPA while pursuing her undergraduate degree in sport management and a graduate certificate in leadership, education theory and practice. Distin also claimed a plethora of academic honors. She was added to the SEC Honor Roll and named a USTFCCCA All-Academic in the 2021-23 seasons and qualified for the AD Honor Roll every semester she has been enrolled at A&M.

Distin sets her sights on a three-peat of titles at the SEC Outdoor Championships in Gainesville, Florida, May 9-11.
