Proposal to Ban Funeral Processions

MCALLEN, Texas (AP) _ A South Texas district attorney says funeral processions should be banned in his community.

Hidalgo County District Attorney Rene Guerra says in Friday editions of The Monitor that a fatal crash during a funeral procession earlier in the week prompted him to express
long-standing safety concerns about the motorcades.

A Hidalgo County constable’s deputy in a cruiser, struck and killed an Alamo woman in another vehicle Wednesday. Pharr police are investigating.

Guerra says careless drivers often disregard those escorting funeral processions. In addition, the processions require a lot of manpower and it’s not clear who should be paid for the service.

Rivera Funeral Home Director Marc Gonzalez in McAllen says people are used to processions that honor the dead and some will be upset if they ban escorts.
