Fired Employee Charged in Gallery Furniture Blaze

HOUSTON (AP) _ Houston police arrested a former Gallery Furniture employee Tuesday in the wake of a massive fire at Gallery’s warehouse in May.

Fire officials say 66-year-old Robert Gillham has been charged with first-degree felony arson for allegedly setting a four-alarm blaze that destroyed the warehouse. They say it was one of the largest fires in Houston history, causing close to $20 million in damage.

Fire investigator Rob Elder said Gillham had been fired a few years ago from the store.

Gallery Furniture’s 100,000-square-foot warehouse burned to the ground, but firefighters were able to save the showroom. Owner Jim McIngvale said the store reopened Fourth of July weekend and the warehouse will be back in operation by Thanksgiving.
