A third person has died from last week’s explosion at a wellsite in western Burleson County.
That announcement came Monday morning from Chesapeake Energy.
One survivor from the incident southwest of Deanville remains hospitalized.
Chesapeake’s news release also stated what caused the explosion, which happened during something called “workover operations”, remains under investigation.
Friday update:
The owner of a Burleson County wellsite that exploded Wednesday afternoon announces a second death.
Chesapeake Energy reported both deaths were employees of contractors.
According to Friday’s news release from Chesapeake, employees of two firms were at the wellsite southwest of Deanville.
The statement did not disclose if the person who died at the scene and/or the person who died Thursday evening worked for C.C. Forbes or Eagle Pressure Control.
Two more people remain hospitalized.
Chesapeake announced the well has been secured.
Wednesday’s explosion took place during what Chesapeake described only as “workover operations”.
Thursday update:
The only new information about Wednesday’s explosion of a wellsite in western Burleson County near Deanville, is that the fire is extinguished…and air monitoring currently indicates no risk to public health and the environment.
Chesapeake Energy, which owns the wellsite, has not provided an update on the status of three people who were flown to hospitals in Houston and Austin, and whether they were Chesapeake employees.
Someone working for a private contractor was killed. Their identity and their employer have not been released.
Chesapeake has personnel from their emergency response department and a third party well control specialist on site working to secure the well.
Thursday’s update from Chesapeake indicated the victims were engaged in something called “workover operations” at the time of the explosion. WTAW News has asked Chesapeake to translate what “workover operations” means and what is involved in securing the well.
Wednesday evening update:
An explosion in western Burleson County Wednesday has resulted in one death and three injuries.
The explosion took place at a wellsite owned by Chesapeake Energy southwest of Deanville.
Chesapeake’s director of communications and investor relations Gordon Pennoyer says a contractor died and the injured were flown by helicopter to medical facilities in Houston and Austin.
Pennoyer reported shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday that first responders and a team from an oilfield emergency response company are on location.
DPS reported earlier that FM 60 remains open to traffic, but the county road leading to the site of the explosion is closed.

DPS reports a natural gas well owned by Chesapeake Energy blew southwest of Deanville.
