A Brazos County district court jury has convicted and sentenced a College Station man of an armed robbery at a Bryan business in September last year, then apologizing to the store clerk.

The jury gave 24 year old Alexander Ray Castillo 20 years for the holdup at Fatty’s Smoke Shop on South Texas.

According to the Bryan police arrest report, Castillo told the store employee his daughter was sick and he needed money for a bus ticket to get to Houston before she died.

According to the district attorney’s office, the store clerk took cell phone video as Castillo left with some cash out of the cash register.

Officers found Castillo about one hour later in the parking lot of Walmart on Briarcrest. It took five officers to place handcuffs on Castillo.

Prosecutors say police found in Castillo’s car, numerous tools, jewelry, knives, checkbooks, social security and debit cards, and records containing financial information. Several of the victims testified that they had their financial information stolen from their cars during the six months prior to the armed robbery.
