Local Pitching Talent Helps Bombers Blank Generals Again

Bryan/College Station, TX – June 26, 2019 – Despite the weather dousing the field up until minutes before first pitch, the Brazos Valley Bombers remained on fire during a 6-0 win over the Victoria Generals Wednesday night. The stout defensive effort provided the Bombers their ninth straight win.

Hunter Dobbins helmed the defense from the mound for the first five innings. The former Rudder High School Ranger tossed 6 strikeouts and let up just 2 hits during his outing. Dobbins walked a mere 2 batters. Dobbins made an appearance as the designated hitter on Tuesday but pitched for the first time in a Bombers uniform Wednesday.

“I was proud of him,” said General Manager Brian Nelson after the game. “We get those four runs early, and it allows him to settle in and have a really good debut. It’s a really good sign, and I think he’s only going to get better.”

John Altman entered in the sixth to maintain the shutout. Altman, another local talent from A&M Consolidated High School, fanned 1 and allowed a single hit in two innings. Bryce Bennett and Zach DeLeon finished out the night from the mound. Bennett tossed a single no-hitter inning with a strikeout before relinquishing control to DeLeon.

DeLeon struck out 2 and allowed no hits in the final inning of play to secure the second shutout of the season for the Bombers and the second shutout against the Generals in nine games.

“I tried to go after hitters,” said DeLeon. “I’ve been pounding fastballs and trying to work at that. If they start touching it, then they get the nasty stuff.”

Chase Kemp led the offense with 3 hits on 4 at-bats. The star first baseman knocked in 3 runs on 2 singles and a double. The offense rolled early, plating four runners in the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Bryant Shellenbarger, Kyle Bergeron and Kemp. Kemp drove in Bergeron in the bottom of the sixth and again in the bottom of the eighth to put the Bombers up 6-0.

The Bombers also blanked the Generals 5-0 on June 16.

The Bombers remain undefeated against the Victoria Generals and improve to 19-3. The Generals fall to 15-8.
