Bergeron Bombs Three-Run Homer in Extra Innings Win

Bryan/College Station, TX – June 18, 2019 – The Bombers escape another close contest from the Victoria Generals with a sacrifice fly from Cole Coker to drive in Ridge Rogers in the bottom of the eleventh.

Logan Teske made his second start of the season for the Bombers. The Southeastern Oklahoma State product surrendered seven hits and three runs but struck out four and walked no batters through five innings of work.

The Generals scored first to break the Bombers five-game streak of getting on the board before their opponents. Ryan Flores kept up his hot streak against the Bombers with an RBI double to send Jonathan Tapia home. However, the Bombers bounced back to take the lead quickly. Kyle Bergeron crushed a home run over the left field wall for a three-RBI homer that brought Ridge Rogers and Hunter Coleman across the plate in the bottom of the first inning.

The Bombers offense was held scoreless for the next few innings by the Generals defense.

The Generals plated another in the top of the fourth when Payton Robertson drilled one to left field to drive in Flores. Flores had reached the basepaths on a ground-rule double. Robertson stole third and scored on a deep shot from Ian Groves to tie the game at 3-3.

Joe Buckendorff relieved Teske at the top of six. Buckendorff had to work around a pair of walks but was able to strike out the Generals batter to end the inning.

Alex Canul struck three batters in the sixth inning to pack the bases with Bombers, and the Generals replaced him with Jack Engelmann. Engelmann’s submarine pitching paid off for Victoria and they escaped the inning without letting in a run.

The Bombers made a pitching change of their own in the seventh, sending Christian Vega to the mound. Vega struck out four and walked one.

With the innings waning, Kemp slapped a double to the left-center wall. Bryant Shellenbarger came in to pinch-hit for Tyler Smith and slipped one past the defense to allow Kemp to come around and score, giving the Bombers a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth. The Generals answered with a solo home run from Bennett Laurence in the ninth, and the game headed to extra innings.

Tristan Stivors and Dontae Woodard both made appearances on the mound late in the game to make sure that the Generals would not steal the win.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, Rogers got on base with a walk, stole second, stole third and then scored the game-winning run off Coker’s sacrifice fly to secure the win for Brazos Valley.

Rogers finished the game with an impressive handful of stolen bases.

The Bombers advance to 14-3 in the Texas Collegiate League. Victoria will continue to try and dethrone the Bombers at Travis Field Wednesday night.
