LEXINGTON, Ky.- No. 19 Texas A&M picked up its third top-15 win of the season, defeating No. 11 Kentucky 62-55 in a women’s basketball game at Memorial Coliseum. The victory secures Texas A&M a double-bye into the March 8 quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament in Greeneville, S.C.
The Aggies (22-6, 11-4 SEC) clamped down on defense, holding the Wildcats to a lone field goal over the last six minutes of the game as Chennedy Carter scored seven of her game-high 24 points in that span to pull away. The Aggies sealed victory with a Ciera Johnson jumper with 49 seconds to play that extended the lead to the final margin of seven.
Johnson notched a double double for the second consecutive game, scoring 16 points and adding a team-high 13 rebounds. Kayla Wells added 14, marking her 11th straight game scoring at least 13 points. Carter added seven rebounds and five assists.
Texas A&M stormed out of the gates, building a 22-7 lead early in the second quarter. Kentucky (23-6, 10-5 SEC) immediately retaliated with a 19-3 response to take a 1-point lead with just over a minute left in the first half, but Texas A&M led 28-26 at the half.
Texas A&M concludes the regular season on Sunday, March 3, hosting Arkansas at 4 p.m., with broadcast set on SEC Network.
