Two years ago, the city of Bryan and the other co-owners of the Gibbons Creek power plant in Grimes County decided to reduce operations to just cover summertime peak electric demand.
This summer, the coal-fired facility will remain shut down following notification by the Texas Municipal Power Agency (TMPA) to ERCOT, which manages the power grid for most of Texas.
ERCOT will lose almost half their margin of extra power this summer.
Electric customers served by BTU will not be impacted. General manager Gary Miller says BTU has secured contracts from other providers to replace one hundred percent of the energy that would have been generated at Gibbons Creek.
Bryan city manager Kean Register, who is on the TMPA board, says 14 people continue to work at Gibbons Creek.
And Register says there is no change in the recreational use at Gibbons Creek lake.
