With no discussion, the Bryan city council has unanimously given land to a private developer to build homes.
Early last year, the city accepted the donation of almost nine acres of land along West Martin Luther King Street from private developers who purchased the former Carver elementary school.
At this week’s meeting, the council approved giving the land in what’s called Hope Crossing to a development group managed by Wallace Phillips.
About two-thirds of the land will be used to build 53 single family homes.
The size of the homes will be between 1,000 and 1,400 square feet and will have a sales price as low as $126,000 and as high as $190,000 dollars.
Once the land has been rezoned, the homebuilder has 18 months to start construction and four years to complete at least 27 of the homes.
When all the homes are built, the assessed valuation is estimated at between $8 and $10 million dollars.
The remaining land will be used for park space and a half-mile trail loop dedicated to the city’s late neighborhood and youth services manager Ronnie Jackson.
The development group is required to get final city council approval following detailed development reviews by the planning and zoning commission and the parks board.
