GALVESTON, Texas (AP) _ Investigators say they kept their promise of bringing justice in the “Baby Grace” trial.
A Galveston jury on Monday convicted Kimberly Dawn Trenor, 20, of the beating death of her 2-year-old daughter, whose remains were dubbed “Baby Grace.”
Many of those investigators cried after hearing the verdict read in the courtroom.
The girl’s unidentified remains were found in a container in Galveston Bay in October 2007.
The victim was dubbed “Baby Grace” until relatives in Ohio saw media stories about the girl and identified her as Riley Ann Sawyers.
Galveston County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Barry says investigators made a promise to find the people responsible for the child’s death.
After the verdict, Galveston County District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk said, “Justice has been served today. Today it’s about Riley. We were in that courtroom for Riley.”
Jurors deliberated less than two hours before reaching a verdict. The conviction brought an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole.
Trenor’s boyfried, Royce Clyde Ziegler II, 22, will stand trial separately for Riley’s death.
