Pickup Fire Shuts Down The Freeway In College Station

Northbound freeway traffic in College Station was at a standstill for about one and a half hours Thursday afternoon due to a pickup fire.

College Station firefighters report no was one injured.

CSFD investigators determined the driver of the pickup pulled off the freeway near the Southwest Parkway bridge and parked the truck on some hay that’s been in the median for several days.

The heat from the pickup started some hay on fire, then the fire spread to the truck, destroying the vehicle.

CSFD was dispatched at 4:19 p.m., arrived at 4:25, and had the fire under control at 4:36. WTAW News monitoring the traffic indicated the cleanup took until after 5:30 p.m.

While northbound lanes of the freeway and the northbound service road were blocked, southbound traffic reopened sooner…except for a brief period when southbound lanes were blocked after a northbound truck got stuck making a U-turn in the median. A good samaritan helped pull the semi out of the median and get into the southbound lanes.
