College Station School Board Considering Limiting Student Use Of Electronic Devices

College Station school board members are considering changes to the district’s policy regarding student use of electronic devices.

Five strategies that were made in April by a CSISD committee were discussed during the board’s June workshop meeting.

Those strategies are (1) Revise electronic device policy to restrict cell phone use on campuses to approved educational use only, (2) Consistent application of policies, (3) Strengthened wi-fi filters, (4) K-8 Technology Safety Curriculum, and (5) Parent Education.

Superintendent Clark Ealy was asked if any consideration has been given to elementary students being banned from having online devices. Dr. Ealy says that subject will be discussed at the next meeting of all ten elementary principals.

The superintendent also brought up the possibility of blocking access to social network sites.

Dr. Ealy says another factor is knowing what students are doing on their devices while they are on their own data plans and not on CSISD’s wi-fi network.
