New Texas A&M Student Counseling Center Director Visits The Faculty Senate

The guest speaker at the March Texas A&M faculty senate meeting is in her third month as director of the university’s student counseling services.

However, Dr. Mary Ann Covey has been at A&M since 1988.

Covey said the purpose of her visit was to respond to the myth that it takes six weeks for students to be seen. During this semester, she said the average waiting time has been nine business days.

Another myth that is at A&M and nationwide is “that everybody wants something yesterday and they want it fixed in ten minutes.”

Covey says instead of therapy, they are teaching students skills.

She also says the center has had student groups this semester learning how to be resilient and how to handle failure.

And students are told that “it is fine to be uncomfortable.”
