Construction will start soon on a more than $17 million dollar expansion and renovation of Brazos County’s juvenile detention facility.
County judge Duane Peters says the project was driven by a change in federal regulations that lowered the ratio of inmates to officers from 12 to one, to eight to one.
The project adds 42 beds and renovates the center’s medical area, kitchen, and gym.
Peters says the county was fortunate that the low bid also includes eight alternates, one which adds educational space that he hopes will lead to removing old portable buildings.
