College Station City Council Approves More Money For Veterans Park Athletic Complex Expansion

An expansion at Veterans Park that was estimated at $3.6 million dollars is now at $5.2 million.

The College Station city council agreed Monday night to spend another $1.55 million in hotel occupancy tax money for two more lighted synthetic turf fields, another parking lot, another restroom, and other amenities.

Public works director Donald Harmon said the additional cost was in part to provide adequate drainage to protect the fields…something that became an issue with the development of the formal design of the project.

While the council accepted staff’s belief that enough hotel tax money will be generated to cover this and pay for the creation of the new Southeast Park…Jerome Rektorik doesn’t want staff returning for more money on the Veterans Park expansion.

The council is tentatively scheduled to award a construction contract is next month. If that is approved, construction is expected to be completed, weather permitting, sometime this fall.
