Aggie Women Fall to Mississippi State in SEC Semifinals

NASHVILLE- No. 15 Texas A&M saw its run in the SEC Tournament come to an end with a 70-55 semifinal loss to SEC regular-season champion and undefeated Mississippi State today at Bridgestone Arena.

The No. 5 seed Aggies (24-9) were led by SEC Freshman of the Year Chennedy Carter, who finished with a game-high 27 points. Anriel Howard led all players with a team season-high-tying 17 rebounds, and Khaalia Hillsman also reached double-figure rebounds with 10

No. 2-ranked MSU (32-0) had three players with double-figure points, including Victoria Vivians’ team-high 22 points. The Bulldogs committed five turnovers, equaling the lowest by an A&M opponent this season, while forcing 16 turnovers by the Aggies.

A&M led by as many as eight points and held an 18-14 lead after the opening quarter, but Mississippi State outscored the Aggies, 16-4, over the last seven minutes of the second quarter to build a 36-28 lead at halftime.

A&M was unable to overcome the deficit as the Bulldogs hit four 3-pointers in the third period and used a 9-0 run to build a 54-40 advantage heading into the final quarter. Mississippi State, which led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter, outshot A&M, 43 to 37 percent for the game.

The Aggies, who were playing in their third SEC semifinal in six years and won the championship in 2013, now await the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Selection Show and the announcement of the 64-team tournament field which will be revealed Monday, March 12 at 6 p.m. on ESPN.

Mississippi State, which has never won the SEC Tournament, advances to the final for the third consecutive year and the fourth time since the tournament was first held in 1980. The Bulldogs will face the winner between No. 2 seed South Carolina and No. 3 seed Georgia in the championship game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
