Voter Turnout Brisk Across Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) _ Vote tallies from counties with the most registered voters show Texans are casting far more early ballots than compared to the November 2006 election.

Early voting began Oct. 18 and ends Friday.

The Texas secretary of state’s office says, through Sunday, about 10 percent of the registered voters in 15 counties, or 842,204 ballots, had been cast, compared to 476,845 early votes made through the same number of days in 2006.

The tally includes in-person voting and mail-in ballots.

Harris County, home to Democrat gubernatorial candidate Bill White, voters cast more than twice the early votes of 2006. White faces Republican Gov. Rick Perry in the Nov. 2 election.

Voters in the 15 counties make up almost 63 percent of the state’s nearly 13.3 million registered voters.
