Storms Wreak Havoc in North Texas

DALLAS (AP) _ Strong thunderstorms toppled trees and knocked out power to more than 260,000 homes and residences in Texas Wednesday night.

The storms with wind gusts of up to 72 miles-per-hour developed in West Texas and moved quickly across the state. A spokeswoman for Oncor Electric Delivery says outage figures were expected to increase as the storm system moved east.

The storms also caused problems with air travel and delayed some flights arriving at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport by more than two hours.

At Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, the rain was so heavy that the centerfield fence wasn’t visible from the press box and the Texas Rangers’ game with the Toronto Blue Jays was in rain delay.

National Weather Service forecasters issued several tornado warnings as the storm system moved out of West Texas into the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

Power outages were also reported in Flower Mound and Wise County.
