Texas A&M’s Rinderknech wins ITA Texas Regional; Olivares Captures Women’s Consolation Finals

Rinderknech Wins ITA Texas Regional

COLLEGE STATION, Texas –Texas A&M junior Arthur Rinderknech claimed the 2016 ITA Texas Regional Championships Monday morning in Ft. Worth, Texas. The event was hosted by TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

No. 9 Rinderknech topped No. 95 Jolan Cailleau of Texas Tech, 6-1, 7-5 to improve to 6-0 on the weekend. The Paris, France native claimed the title for the second straight year, winning the 2015 Regional in Houston, to advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in Flushing, N.Y. As the only tournament on the ITA calendar to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.

Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the ITA Oracle Cup Super Bowl, and the consolation champions, doubles finalists, men’s singles quarterfinalists and women’s singles semifinalists from the Saint Francis ITA Men’s and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.

In doubles action, No. 20 Max Lunkin and Arthur Rinderknech fell, 6-3, 6-2, to No. 41 Trevor Johnson and Reese Stadler of TCU. The Maroon & White duo were 4-1 on the weekend, including wins over opponents from Abilene Christian, Texas, Rice and Texas Tech.

Rinderknech advanced to the finals in both the singles and doubles bracket for the second straight year. Last season, Rinderknech claimed the Texas Regional over Hunter Johnson of SMU, winning all six of his matches in straight sets. The right-hander played alongside former teammate Shane Vinsant in the doubles bracket, falling to the third-ranked team in the country.

Texas A&M’s Olivares Wins Consolation Finals

WACO, Texas – Texas A&M’s Macarena Olivares captured the consolation championship at the ITA Texas Regional Championships today at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center, defeating Maria Kononova of North Texas, 6-2, 6-3. It was the sixth consecutive victory for the junior from Chile.

“[Associate Head Coach Patrick Sullivan] and I are very pleased with our overall results,” Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. “Macarena ended up playing some great tennis and went through the consolation draw rather comfortably against some good competition. Rachel [Pierson] had an excellent tournament overall and unfortunately ran into Blair Shankle, who was playing at an extremely high level of tennis and ultimately won both the singles and doubles rather routinely.”

Pierson, a senior, was one victory short of reaching the finals of the main draw in singles as well as doubles with partner Rutuja Bhosale.

Texas A&M returns to action and makes its home debut, Nov. 4-6, as the Aggies play host to Rice, Stephen F. Austin and Washington in the first-ever David Kent Invitational at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The tournament is named in honor of Texas A&M’s former legendary men’s and women’s tennis coach.

“The fall season is coming to a close, and we are looking forward to getting some good practices in over the next week or so as we prepare to compete at home in the David Kent Invitational,” Weaver added.

The Aggies conclude the fall season at the UNLV Rebel Invitational, Nov. 11-13 in Las Vegas.
