WASHINGTON (AP) _ A disciplinary panel of judges is urging the impeachment of federal judge Samuel Kent, who is headed to prison for lying about the sexual abuse of two assistants.
The letter from the Judicial Council of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to a policy making panel of the appellate court says Kent has acknowledged behavior that constitutes grounds for impeachment.
Chief Justice Edith Jones, the head of the Judicial Council, also has denied Kent’s request to retire on disability. Kent planned to continue to collect his full judicial salary for the rest of his life.
The House Judiciary Committee has begun to investigate whether to impeach Kent, the only way to remove a federal judge from the bench.
